5 Cool Storage Ideas for Eyeshadow and Makeup in Small Spaces

Small spaces require you to get creative with your makeup storage. An eyeshadow organizer works wonders, but when you need more space, there are a lot of fun ideas that can help you make the most of your space.

You never have to leave your makeup all over the place.

There are cool storage ideas that go beyond a basic eyeshadow palette holder and can help you get control of your makeup organization.

1. Magnetic Board Magic

This is such a neat trick that I just had to share it with you. If you’re in a really small space and don’t have the room to store items, how about some wall décor? A great use of space is your walls, and you can make your own, picture-frame-like magnetic board to hold all of your makeup items – or at least some.

You’ll need a few items to get started:

  • Picture frame
  • Sheet metal
  • Textured paper or decorative picture
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Small magnets

You’ll need sheet metal that fits into the frame, so keep this in mind. What you’ll do is glue the metal into the frame (make sure it’s not a frame you’ll want to keep in the future) and then glue the paper on top of the sheet to make it look nice.

At this point, you should be able to hang your frame.

Make sure that the paper isn’t too thick and that the magnetics can still attach to the metal without an issue. You’ll need strong magnets.

Now, glue the magnets to your makeup accessories and attach them to the magnetic board. This will require you to have makeup that’s not too heavy, so keep this in mind.

You might not be able to put your eyeshadow palette holder on the board, but you will be able to put small compacts and other items right on your wall. This is a great space-saving tip that works wonders when room is severely limited.

2. Dish Racks Are a Perfect Eyeshadow Organizer

If you need an eyeshadow organizer, a dish rack will work very well. You can find one of these dish racks at the dollar store or online, and then, all you need to do is find a good place for the rack on your bathroom counter.

The key is to use the rack for all of your eyeshadows and compacts.

You can place your rack on your:

  • Bathroom counter
  • Washing or drying machine
  • Dresser

The great thing about this neat tip is that you can store all of your items neatly. The rack will offer more than enough space, and since it’s so affordable, you can place several around your home to hold all your accessories.

Makeup organization doesn’t need to be expensive when you have a dish rack available.

3. Traditional Organizer

I never recommend throwing all of your makeup and eyeshadow in a random dresser drawer. There are so many cheap makeup organizers that will be able to hold all of your makeup without costing a bundle.

There are also small organizers that can always fit on a dresser or on top of the counter.

A few things to consider when making your purchase are:

  • An organizer that’s black or not transparent will not be easy to see through. The problem is that you will want to be able to view your makeup without having to open every drawer. Transparent makeup organizers always work best when a person has a lot of makeup they need to hold.
  • The compartments and storage spaces your organizer has is very important, too. If you plan on storing lipstick or eyeshadow, you need to make sure there are ample compartments for all of your needs. A large top is great, too, and will be able to hold other beauty accessories, such as perfume, lotion and bronzer.

Of course, these may seem like two small features, but trust me when I say that they will make a huge difference in the way that you store your makeup.

I recommend buying a unit that’s large enough for your current and potential future makeup storage needs.

4. Homemade Makeup Brush Holder

Makeup brushes can be stored easily in a DIY holder. It sounds silly, but you’ll be able to make your own holder fast and efficiently. You’ll want a clear vase or something similar to be able to put coffee beans or other items in.

The idea is to have 3 – 4 inches of coffee beans or beads that you can then stick the bottom of your brush into.

Why is this important?

  1. Makeup brushes are notoriously difficult to store, so this holder will come in great use.
  2. The bristles on your makeup brush can become damaged, but since the brush is held upright, this DIY unit will extend the longevity of your brushes.

You can use any container or holder for this tip. If you’re really strapped for money or don’t have a glass container, you can even use a large coffee can and fill it with coffee beans. What I really appreciate about this method is that it will fill the room with the aroma of coffee, so it’s a great option for coffee lovers who don’t mind smelling coffee when they’re applying their makeup.

5. Wine Racks and Clear Cups

If you have a wine rack you’re not using, a neat trick that my friend told me about is to fill in the rack with clear cups or bottles. The amount of storage you’ll gain is impressive, and you’ll be able to store a slew of items in these cups, including:

  • Pencils
  • Brushes
  • Lipstick

I recommend designating different compartments for your different storage needs. I’ve found this to be especially helpful for other items, too, including magazines, costume jewelry and even for sunglasses.

If you have kids, this is also the perfect storage space for crayons and markers. I’m confident that once you start thinking outside the box, you’ll be able to find countless options to store your makeup, eyeshadow and accessories.

When in doubt, also look for sales on makeup organizers that are affordable and designed specifically for makeup.
