How to Organize Makeup on Your Dresser

How to Organize Makeup on Your Dresser

How big is your makeup collection? If your drawers are overflowing and you have products scattered throughout your home, it may be time to get organized.

Organizing your makeup will not only help you find things easier, but also help keep your makeup in better condition.

How do you get organized? We’re going to share some tips to help you get started.

Invest in a Good Organizer

A good makeup organizer will change your entire routine. It will keep all of your items in a safe place and make it easy to find everything you need.

How much time do you waste rummaging through your makeup drawers in the morning or before you get ready to go out at night?

If you had an organizer on your dresser, you wouldn’t waste any time.

There are so many different types of makeup organizers out there, so you may feel overwhelmed when trying to choose one.

There are wide organizers with drawers, there are towers as tall as you, and there are compartments that you can put in your drawer to act as an organizer.

To decide what type of organizer is right for you, take a look at your collection. If you have 20 different shades of lipstick and 10 different palettes, you may need a serious (and big) organizer.

Regardless of how big or small your collection is, an organizer will keep your dresser clean and eliminate time wasted rummaging through drawers looking for one shade of lipstick.

Build Your Own Organizer

If you’re on a tight budget, you may not be able to buy an organizer. The good news? You can make your own.

There are so many great DIY organizer ideas out there. Some of the best ones that I’ve used personally include:

  • File sorters
  • Mail organizers
  • Magazine racks
  • CD towers
  • Baskets
  • Spice rack

The simplest and most inexpensive route is to take a series of baskets (you can buy them at the dollar store) and place them in a dresser drawer. These baskets will keep your makeup organized and within easy reach.

You can get very creative when making your own organizer, and you can find pretty containers to put your makeup in. Maybe you have old baskets laying around or you’re getting ready to throw out that file organizer (great for palettes) in your home office. These items can be upcycled and used to store your makeup. If you’re on a shoestring budget or just want to upcycle old items, this is a great route to go.

But if you do have the budget, I recommend just buying an organizer. Each compartment and drawer is actually designed for cosmetics, so they fit perfectly. And because most organizers are made of clear acrylic, you can see everything at a glance.

Group Makeup By Type

Once you have your organizer – whether DIY or bought – you can start actually sorting and organizing your makeup.

The first and most obvious way to organize your cosmetics is to group your items by type. If your organizer has drawers, you may place all of your eyeshadows or lipsticks in one place. Storing your makeup this way makes it easy to find what you need without even thinking about it.

This way, you can grab what you need, lay it out on the dresser, and get right to work.

While this is the simplest way to organize your makeup, there are other ways to group your items that may make it even easier to get the look you want.

Group Makeup by Palette or Look

Another great way to organize makeup is by look or palette. This may require a little extra work, but it’s worth it. Everything you need is in one compartment or bag, so you can grab and go, so to speak.

The goal here is to group your items by the look you want or a palette. That means placing your eye makeup, blush, eyeliner and everything else you need to complete a look into one group. When you’re ready to put on that look, you take out that basket or bag and everything you need is right there.

Makeup artists often group their makeup this way because it saves them so much time.

Now, you’ll need to keep the basics, like foundation and mascara, in a separate place. You’ll use these with any look you create. But the rest of the items can be grouped together.

Keep Your Items in Easy Reach

Once you have decided what to put your makeup in and how to organize it, you can decide where to put your makeup.

The top of your dresser is the most obvious place because this will put all of your items within easy reach.

But you can also put your organizer in a drawer or even hang it on the wall. The drawer is a nice place because it’s easy to get to and hide away when you’re done. The wall will also give you more dresser space, but you won’t be able to just reach out and get what you need without having to get up and down off your chair.

Keeping items in easy reach is the most important thing – at least that’s what I’ve found. When everything is right in front of me, it’s so much easier to get started and I have more fun because I’m not juggling a hundred different products.

Ultimately, the goal is to make your life easier when you go to put your makeup on. Find a way to group and store your items that helps you find what you need quickly and without frustration. I’ve found that using an organizer and grouping my makeup by type works best for me. My organizer sits on my vanity, and everything I need is right in front of me.

There’s no right or wrong way to organize your items. Just find something that works for you, and keeps your drawers from looking like a cluttered mess. And if you do buy an organizer, try to take into account any items you might buy in the future. This way, you’ll have room to store these items after you buy them.
